There are various ways to repair a chimney depending on the job requirement, but in order to strengthen and seal the chimney stack from leaks and air, there are two main methods; mortar repointing or haunching.
Repointing or tuckpointing is the term used to fill the voids in the brick joints with new cement mortar.
This is an important part of restoring the chimney stack, as it can prevent rain water entering the property. If the pointing is left to decay and crumble over time, this can lead to penetrating damp and ultimately expensive structural problems. So it pays not to ignore just restore.
Repointing is basically replacing the mortar with a new 3:1 sand & cement mortar that is placed into the raked out brick joints, normally 15mm - 20mm deep. Then smoothed off using a pointing iron, which leaves a curved profile edge on the arris of the bricks.
Tuckpointing is a very similar process to repointing but instead of using one mortar, tuckpointing is made up of 2 coloured mortars. This helps to hide any imperfections or irregularities in the bricks, creating a perfect & even brickwork look.
A coloured mortar which is close in colour to the bricks is placed into the raked out joints at a depth of 15mm - 20mm and flushed even with the arris of the bricks. (this process is called ‘stopping‘) Then a white ribbon mortar, approximately 5mm wide is placed on top of the coloured mortar creating a perfect brickwork look, this is mainly used on heritage style properties.
