Chimney stacks are a familiar feature on rooftops in Sydney, but if not properly maintained, they can lead to issues. A major concern with chimney stacks that rise above the roofline is water infiltration. This problem can be caused by a range of factors, including the deterioration of older flashings and mortar.
As time passes, the mortar holding the bricks of the chimney together can deteriorate allowing water to infiltrate. This can result in interior leaks and structural damage to the chimney itself. Likewise, the deterioration of old flashings, which are lead or metal placed around the chimney's base to repel water, can also lead to water seepage problems.
